Swarovski challenged us to "reinvent" the chandelier for its "Crystal Palace" collection. Its aim is to develop innovative and revolutionary chandeliers through the fusion of exceptional design with flawless crystal, in partnership with lighting manufacturers eager to realize the new concepts. We built NEST in the organic shape of a nest that weds traditional crystal material, considered old fashioned today, with a 21st century lighting technology. The result is a new direction for the Swarovski brand, who has decided to develop the original NEST concept into a full fledge product offering: a first for the century old largest Crystal manufacturer in the world. The Nest Chandelier is merging the historical craft of crystal, with modern practical design and new lighting technology. Nests hollow opening surrounds the viewer, presenting a sparkling view from the inside. The lighted nest is made of an electroluminescent film and a ÒcocoonÓ of crystals. We made the chandelier in two sizes, enormous and mini. The large Nest stands at almost four meters high, weighs 600 pounds, and includes 7500 Swarovski crystals. The smaller Nest, now in production, is one meter tall, and features 2100 crystals, available in both JET black crystal and NATURAL crystal. The Small Nest is a full featured, dimmable consumer chandelier that mixes Crystal with the practical needs of modern lighting. The electroluminescent film transformer is contained within the upper ÒhoodÓ structure of Nest. Installation of the crystal chains require about 60 minutes. Small Nest truly represents a new direction for the crystal industry: a modern and poetic interpretation of the traditional crystal and chandelier craft for the 21rst century. Small Nest debuted in Miami on December 2, 2004 at the Art Basel Exhibition. Its precursor, ÒLarge NestÓ was unveiled at the Salone de Mobile in Milan, the biggest international furniture fair, April 2004. Since, it has exhibited in New York City during ICFF, where the chandelier hung in the citys first YMCA, currently being renovated by the Apartment Design Group. The brilliant glow of Nest created an atmosphere of change, rebirth and hope against the raw, deconstructed space. Look for the ÒLarge Nests unique presentation later this year on its international exhibition tour.
