After more than ten years of working alongside glass masters from Murano, Emmanuel Babled, with this exhibition, confirms his expertise in glass making and revives the forms and languages of this art. Toys is a celebration of the playful yet irreverent manner in which Babled works this extremely precious, fragile and richly historical material. He explores the limits of hand-held glass blowing techniques and allows only the most technically perfect pieces to emerge from the furnaces. This perfection in craft is accompanied, nonetheless, by a constant and deliberate betrayal of the classical idea of the vase, decorative object, or animal figurine. The functional size and decorative aspects of the pieces are being constantly challenged and reworked.
The series entitled Megalit focuses on the idea of the vase stretched to its dimensional limits. Here the objects of sensual beauty or playfulness are actually representations of great effort, of the utmost potential of glass, but also, and more generally, of the human-crafted artefact in all its forms. |
Technique
All the works on exhibit from the new series Toys have been produced exclusively by the renown glassworks company VENINI. It is an outstanding venture for the world-famous glass manufacturer who enthusiastically produced the innovative pieces - creations whose design is both respectful and indifferent to tradition and far from commercial tastes.
