Wings of Venice is a sculptural, monumental and conceptual Project. This contemporary work is a technical and artistic challenge; A massive Bird sitting on the water in the heart of Venice, at the entrance to the Serenissima, Punta della Dogana. The aspiring Bird represents a strong and symbolic message of rebirth, confirms and glorifies glass as being pure and authentic art material. The artists is the head and the glass master is the arm; a synergetic exchange almost instinctive, but aimed at obtaining true work of art. In its apparent simplicity, the project is in fact very complex. It deals with bringing the artistic requests of the artists nearer to the technical sensitivity of the glass master, without ever going beyond boundaries in interpretive variations. Here Murano glass will be on show to the world and will prove to be a worthy exponent of the best of international art and design whilst keeping its own individual characteristics.
Designing and projecting The idea has been born from a deep belief of two artists in the incredible ability that the Murano glass masters possess, their technical ability were the main source of inspiration for the two designers. They embarked on designing this contemporary sculpture to stimulate and prove, the ability of master glass blower, the adaptability, and the expressive potential of glass that is now freed from its original matrix and has become a material used in art as an art form. Their contribution to the new shapes and daring juxtapositions of colours has created the happy combination of talents and brought to life this ambitious project. They brought together a group of glass masters, engineers and lighting specialists. The size and the positioning of the wings were the reason for careful consideration of all aspects, most of all, the environmental factors like temperature changes, wind, high waves and Venices famous high waterÉ. The wings consist of 416 feathers in glass, some as high as 3 meters, all blown and pulled to required lengths, respecting the form and style, without using any kind of mould, keeping the technical virtuosity at the furnace, a perfect interaction between master glassblower and the artists. The engineers developed the stainless steel structure in conjunction with the sense of elegance and style. The structure is strong but not overwhelming, holds the feathers firmly while at the same time softly. To illuminate, they took advantage of the prominent characteristic of glass and lit the sculpture in a way that reproduces aesthetically, transforming the light on the water.

Weight: 5000kg (1500kg of glass, 2500kg stainless steel structures and 1000kg of silicone) each wing consists of 208 Feathers in glass, and fixed inside stainless steel holdings that are shaped to measure and are placed on four lines of stainless steel structure. ¥ Material: each feather is in crystal glass known by the Venetians as ÒcristalloÓ, blown and pulled to proper length, without using any kind of mould but keeping in with the very accurate form that would have to fit in the metal holdings technically developed by structural engineers. ¥ Colour: the coloured glass is grinded and sieved during the work and shows a love of colour combinations . ¥ Structure: stainless steel. Resembles the bone structure of the bird. Each feather is placed in a stainless steel container and filled with flexible silicone. ¥ Lighting: each feather is lited individually, shows the special qualities of glass and its transparency and enhances its elegant shape.
