The Descent to the Abyss. Jesus is descending to the abyss. His body is covered by a shroud of light. His hands and feet are out of the shroud what symbolizes his humanity. The face on the shroud of light, from Veronica`s scraf from Manopello, symbolizes his divinity.
In the Abyss: Adam, Eve and beasts from a Medevial bestiary symbolize:
Mermaids: temptations
The Phoenix: the mystery of the Redemption.
The Griffin: victory of the light over the darkness.
The Lizzard: the yearning for the light, the redemption.
The Dog: Cerberus, the guardian dog of the kingdom of the dead, is fawing on Jesus.
The Unicorn: chastity and hope.
The Spider: everything fragile in the material world.
