"The Ascention" is the first of twelve stained glass series which I designed for the st.Mathias Church. Delicate ornament of the background symbolize the medallion motifs of medevial stained glass. The orange shaded wide streak of glass represents the Ascention. This colour is similar to when we are looking at the sun with closed eyes. We don`t see the source of light but we know that it exist. Just like the existence of God. - Beata Stankiewicz-Szczerbik The Church of St.Mathias had belonged to the Crusaders with the Red Star since 1253. It is the place of burial of Angelus Silesius, a Silesian poet and mystic. The Church was ruined during The World War II and rebuilt in 1961-66. Now the windows are being reconstructed with the stained glass by Beata Stankiewicz-Szczerbik. I would take a risk of claining it will be the best realization of contemporary stained glass in Wroclaw in the last few years. This work, modern in form and in technology, respects the architecture as well as the atmosphere of the interior. Entrasting the Witraze Oleszczuk workshop with the realization of this stained glass guarantees that the works will be technologically perfect. This Model Reconstruction includes the installation of modern system of protective glass. It will be the first application of this method in sacral building in Wroclaw's diocese. - Beata Fekecz-Tomaszewska In 1995 the Jezuits handed the St.Mathias Church to the Archdiocese of Wroclaw. It became the seat of the Centre of The University Chaplaincy. It is the oldest existing Gothic Church in Wroclaw out of the Ostrow Tumski (the oldest Medieval city centre dating back to 11th.century). I beliwe that many people will want to participate in the history of Wroclaw and sponsor the remaining part of the project. Their names will be commemorated in the Glass. - Rev.Miroslaw Malinski, Rector of St.Mathias Church |
