I am particularly fascinated by the formative years of children, the make believe worlds that they create for themselves, introducing chaos and disorder. This belief runs alongside the idyllic beauty of childhood. The imposed adult perception of innocence and purity a time filled with whimsical play.
By working through memories of a personal and collected nature, I have been trying to understand how we visualize memories and how imagery influences our past: especially with regards to childhood.
I have been extensively collecting old memorabilia, clothes, shoes and family photographs all of which have evoked strong feelings connected with my childhood and have sparked memories in others. From the photographs I have collected I have no personal attachment. I enjoy the anonymity I know nothing about the previous owners, their history or their circumstances. From here I have a starting point from which to narrate my own stories.
Working primarily with the lost wax process of glass casting I produce clay models these are further developed in wax before casting in glass. By incorporating metal components such as screws and nails during the firing process I aim to create the appearance of rusty little toys, the glass surface is polished smooth before scratching and engraving it.
Taking impressions from the clothes I have collected I replicate these in glass using a technique called pate de verre (glass paste). It allows me to cast very fine pieces of glass producing ghostly brittle interpretations. The fragile delicacy of which I feel captures the fragmented feel of old memories, faded remnants of a childhood past.
I am interested in knowing at what point we leave our childhood behind and if it is a conscious departure. I feel it is important to commemorate this transition, this all too brief period as we leave the cosy confines of infancy behind. I would like my work to be seen as a celebration and a study of loss and remembrance.
