Internationally-renown artist Ray King has just installed Luma Wave a dynamic, suspended light-responsive sculpture in the atrium area of the Montgomery County Conference Centers lobby. Luma Wave uses the natural phenomena of light as it iteracts with glass and optics as a light medium. The artwork is comprised of thousands of chromatic glass elements that hover over the escalator in the Conference Centers lobby and project and reflect light and color into the surrounding space. Luma Wave is designed to add a dramatic and dynamic design element that greets visitors and workers to the conference center as they arrive, depart and travel through the new regional conference center.
"I wanted to create a unique work of art that would spark viewers imagination and evoke a sense of fascination, beauty and wonderment" says Mr. King. Ray King is one of the most innovative artists working in the public art realm. His site-specific sculptures have been commissioned and exhibited throughout the U.S. and Europe, including London, Paris and Japan. Luma Wave was installed in October 2004. |
Technique
The 44-foot long sculpture is comprised of approximately 5,000 dichroic glass squares (1 1/2 inch squares by 3/4 inch thick safety glass) attached to hundreds of stainless steel cables at precise intervals to create a curved, three-dimensional, wave-like pattern that echoes the form and movement of the main escalator. The glass components are laminated with a high-tech dichroic film that changes color from deep blue to brilliant gold depending on the orientation of the viewer. The design was inspired by the movement of matter through air and a nod to the regions high-tech industry which transmits information through space.
Based on the Conference Centers orientation, Luma Wave is exposed to direct sunlight in the afternoon, but is dappled and animated by light beams throughout the day which will cause the reflection and refraction of light and color into the surrounding environment. At night, the sculpture is illuminated by electric lights to create an elusive, ethereal and mystical effect in the space, as well.
