The idea of making a glass dress is based on what I use to see under the water while I’m swimming.
It’s a fascinating image to see a reformed second skin around a body, a moment of this ( a frozen image) I wanted to make in reality.
The way how I work is based on following my associations and my intuïtion, I have a certain atmosphere in my mind and I am trying to find the right atmosphere in every sculpture. I am often inspired by things you have around you in your daily life, like food for example. Usually I combine glass with other materials in my work. I use for example strands of hair, oistershells, cutlery, mirrors, Spanish peppers.
The dresses of glass represents a group of women under the deep sea, who have been enjoying a nice diner , these women carry everything they have seen with them during their journey down under the deep sea.
Sometimes I get inspired by a movie, like for example in the Sculpture of Vanity, I saw a beautiful old Italian movie:Una voce humane with actress Anna Magnani. It’s a black and white movie , Anna Magnani is in a hotelroom with her dog, she is very sad, she broke up with her lover and they talk on the phone while she is lying on her bed ,crying and watching herself in a beautiful old handmirror, she complains how awful she looks because of all the crying she did. The Sculpture of Vanity is not representing Anna , but more the oldfashioned romantic atmosphere of the movie, for that reason I used old powderboxes, handmirrors and hairbrushes, I used grey and old rosé bullseye glass with silverpowder to give the sculpture something nostalgic.
